Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Plugin
Accelerated Mobile Pages WordPress Plugin Makes Publishers Lives Easy
If you have a WordPress Website Design, you already know that WordPress is great about making it easy to optimize your site for mobile viewing. Whether you are using one of WordPress’s ready-made sites or you just use WordPress to host a site you built yourself.
Or, if you had it built professionally for you, you are already getting to enjoy the benefits of having a super high-quality platform that lets your readers have a great reading experience with responsive web pages that are optimized for mobile viewing.
What WordPress does not automatically provide, though is accelerated mobile pages. If you want AMP-enabled pages, you need to install an AMP WordPress Plugin that will convert your WordPress site into AMP pages for mobile devices.
What are Accelerated Mobile Pages?
Accelerated Mobile Pages are simple, minimalistic, beautiful pages that are optimized for mobile devices in terms of layout, but which are also optimized for mobile devices in terms of scripts. AMPs don’t run clunky scripts in the background – instead, they are often just text and the occasional image, without even a bunch of fancy formatting to weigh the page down. This means that they load super fast on mobile devices and they don’t have a lot of distracting graphics or elements. In short, AMPs create a fantastic reading experience for your audience.

What do AMPs look like?
Saying that AMPs are mostly text with just a few images and minimal to no additional graphics may make you think that AMPs look boring. But if you want to know what they look like and what reading experience they give, check out Apple News or Facebook Instant Stories. AMPs look like this – the simplicity of the design allows readers to enjoy the content without being distracted. Instead of looking boring, it looks sleek and easy to understand. The popularity of Apple News and Facebook Instant Stories shows how much readers like this format, and now you can benefit from it too on your website!

How does the AMP plugin for WordPress work?
Once you install the AMP plugin for WordPress, you can see what your site looks like in the AMP version by adding /amp/ to the end of your URL. This means that you can send your readers to the AMP version of your site just by customizing the URL you give them.
Unfortunately, the AMP plugin for WordPress does not yet cause your readers to automatically go to the AMP version whenever they view it with a mobile device. You have to actually send them to the AMP version yourself, if you are driving traffic via links.
However, the AMP plugin for WordPress does send visitors to the AMP version if they come from an AMP-enabled traffic source such as Google. This benefits you because people who stumble upon your site via your stellar SEO will get to see the beautiful AMP version of your site and enjoy a truly spectacular reading experience!
What are the limitations of the AMP plugin for WordPress?
As stated above, the AMP plugin for WordPress does not automatically send your visitors to the AMP version any time they view your site on a mobile device. In this way, it is not the same as a responsive web design. Instead, you have to send your visitors to the AMP version yourself by appending /amp/ to the end of your URL.
Another limitation to the AMP plugin for WordPress is that it does not work on the “pages” feature of WordPress. So any content that you are putting up as a post can be linked to with an AMP version, but any static pages will be visible in a standard mobile version, if your visitors are reading them on their mobile devices.
Can I get the AMP plugin on any WordPress site?
Yes! The AMP plugin works if you have had a custom site built for you and hosted on WordPress. Just have your website guru add on the plugin for you and you will be able to start to enjoy the benefits of AMP pages right away! Of course, if you have a stock WordPress site that was pre-created by WordPress, you can add the plugin yourself. Give it a try – your readers deserve to be able to enjoy the AMP experience!
